Deutsche Hypo Finances the Landmark Muntgebouw in Utrecht

Deutsche Hypo – NORD/LB Real Estate Finance has provided a EUR 28 million financing facility for the historic Muntgebouw in Utrecht.

The Muntgebouw is one of Utrecht’s most recognizable historic buildings. Designed by architect C.H. Peters, the building opened in 1911 and served for more than a century as the home of the Dutch Mint, where Dutch coins were produced. The building has been designated a national monument (Rijksmonument) since 2001.

Following an extensive renovation between 2005 and 2007, the building continued to accommodate the Dutch Mint and also housed the Geldmuseum. After coin production at the Muntgebouw ended in 2020, the property underwent a comprehensive restoration and transformation between 2023 and 2026. The redevelopment was carried out by AMSTAM on behalf of the landlord and marked the beginning of AMSTAM’s partnership with the Aaron Group. It was repositioned as a mixed-use property comprising office space, event and conference facilities, hospitality and sports facilities. The property has achieved a Dutch A+++ energy label.

Martijn Turenhout, Senior Director Real Estate Finance at Deutsche Hypo, commented: “The Muntgebouw is a unique property combining historical significance and architectural character with a modern usage concept. We are delighted to support Martin Smit and his investor group with this financing. The repositioning demonstrates how heritage preservation and modern building standards can be successfully combined.”
